The common man pays bribes totalling Rs 21,068 crore a year for various public services , says the ‘India Corruption Study — 2005’, released by Transparency International on Thursday.
I think we should take the figure in perspective. 21,000 crore assuming we have 100 crore people is around Rs 210 per capita bribe.
UN Human Development Index recently said that y2k percapita gdp was approx $444 which is around Rs 20,000. Even the percapita income was around 12,000 in 2004. I'm not supporting bribing, or saying that 210<<12,000, but just that the figures do not refute the fact that india is a poor country.
Poverty is the situation of not being self sufficient. And is not the situation of earning/spending/valuing lesser than a fellow being. Is is not?
If we could spend that kind of money on bribery and keep shouting on the other hand that we are poor and we need more money to support the needy, are we not to be ashamed?
And yeah, please dont convert $ to Rs and compare!!! We dont buy bananas in $s here!!!
Talking of per capita, per capita is a wrong term to use in India, in my opinion. There is no capita at all in most parts of our nation.
